Born from European road racers who needed to stay fit through winter, 'cross has evolved into its own savage discipline — short, punishing laps through mud, sand, grass, and snow, punctuated by barriers you have to shoulder your bike over and run-ups steep enough to make your lungs burn. The bikes are nimble and aggressive, the races are loud and chaotic, and the culture is unlike anything else in cycling — cowbells, beer hand-ups, and hecklers cheering you on through the worst conditions imaginable. Cyclocross riders are a different breed: part road racer, part trail runner, part masochist, and entirely addicted to the chaos.
